Celebrating the Holidays with FPIES

Posted by Courtney Lopez on

Since Sweet Baby’s FPIES diagnosis I’ve tried to find out anything and everything I can about FPIES.  (new here? no worries! read our post – what is FPIES)  I would like to say I know all there is to know, but then I’d be lying.  There’s so much still unknown about FPIES since more research needs to be done and every single case is different. Our situation could be better or worse than the next.  One thing that doesn’t change is how we approach it in certain situations, or how much we let it control our lives.

Banana Ice Cream | recipe + review

banana ice cream

One of Sweet Baby’s first safe foods with her FPIES was Bananas.  Just recently we’ve been adding more and more to her SAFE food list!  One of her favorites has been Enjoy Life Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips they’re Gluten, Dairy, Nut & Soy Free!  Since we received the  Nostalgia Electrics  Fro-Frutti Frozen Fruit Dessert Maker we’ve been making lots of “ice cream” with frozen fruits.  I think the Fro-Frutti review has been the tastiest review Sweet Baby has every done!  I can literally freeze any fruit and turn it into a frozen treat for her.  Many of her safe foods are berries and they come out pretty well too!

WHAT IS FPIES – HOW TO GET AN FPIES DIAGNOSIS – AND WHAT TO DO NEXT

fpies
It was this picture, this day, that we finally realized Sweet Baby had FPIES. She was eating her usual breakfast of yogurt and banana, however this morning I added some oatmeal cereal which she never tried.

I’m often asked, what is FPIES?  I get several emails and messages on Facebook asking about FPIES, so that is why I wrote this blog post.  If you don’t know what FPIES is, or just recently received an FPIES Diagnosis, please know you’re not alone.

Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES)

is not your typical food allergy where you would see hives, fast reaction, anaphylaxis, these are IgE-mediated.

FPIES is Non-IgE-mediated,

meaning you can’t do skin/blood tests, it’s typically an internal manifestation, however, more people are saying their children also suffer some external symptoms like eczema.

What’s the difference between FPIES and a Nut Food Allergy?

This is a question I’m asked all the time.  There are two types of allergies.  IgE-mediated and Non-IgE-mediated.

Raw Apple Cider

Posted by Courtney Lopez on

Raw Apple Cider is made by blending delicious fresh apples in a blender. A healthy whole juice recipe. Who doesn’t love apple cider? After we go apple picking we love making our Raw Apple Cider Recipe!

Having a child with multiple allergies can have it’s  heartbreaking moments.  I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve eaten something and Sweet Baby tries to eat from my plate instead of hers.  It kills me, every single time.  She used to say “My nummy nums!” and now her new thing is “haaam”.   We don’t eat ham often and I don’t remember the last time we did, but whenever she wants to eat something, “haaam”! It’s too darn cute.  I wish I could feed her anything and everything.. and my hope is one day she won’t have FPIES.   Most children outgrow FPIES by age 3.. so fingers crossed ya’ll.   Until then she knows if I don’t allow her to have it she just says “no, no, no’.. Like I said.. heartbreaking.

There’s those horrible moments when I can’t share everything with her, then there’s the best moments when we can enjoy something together.  Food is just more fun when it’s enjoyed with someone else.  Who wants to eat all alone?  I love company.  Family, food, friends, it all makes life complete.  Some days I just feel as if food is just fuel.. and then there’s days like just last week where Sweet Baby and I enjoyed her first “cider”.  While she could probably have apple cider it’s not something I really want to waste a trial on.  (We have to trial each and every food – there’s no test or treatment for FPIES) So we got creative in the kitchen with our Vitamix and baby’s safe foods.  The end result was quite delicious, healthy, and full of love.
