It’s almost summer, can you believe it? In just a few short weeks, Kay and I will be browsing the farmers markets for our favorite fruits, vegetables, and can’t forget Kay’s favorite pretzel buns!
The first thing we always do is stop at 7-Eleven for water. Pretzel buns can make a girl thirsty, not to mention all the walking in the hot sun. When we walk into the store I run right for the water section to ensure we have water for the market. I actually discovered LIFEWTR during one of our runs to 7-Eleven and fell in love with the fun logos. We’ve been purchasing LIFEWTR even before working with them on this fun craft. I love the cool artists’ designs they have featured on each bottle of LIFEWTR. You can find LIFEWTR on a display stand or in the refrigerated aisle in your local 7-Eleven store.
Since we go to the farmers market so much, I asked Kay what bag she wanted to bring this year. She always has a favorite bag she likes to bring. Last year we used her shopping cart, but the bags were so cumbersome and big in it. This year, we were looking for bags we could easily roll up and keep small. She wanted a watermelon bag, then she said strawberry, and then she said red pepper.
To make these bags, we went and purchased some red and green dye because all of her favorite produce features green and red. The dyes we purchased are tie dye, because we didn’t want a solid painted bag, but a more summery one. These bags are fun and most tie dye paints are safe for kids to use, too!
HOW TO MAKE A DIY T-SHIRT BAG:
We started off by using an inside-out large white t-shirt. I snipped the bottom and made large 1 1/2 inch fringes. Once I created the fringes, I then started double knotting them. When you’re all finishing knotting, turn the t-shirt outside-in? Haha!

Now you want to cut off some of the sleeves and the neck so you can create a big opening and handles.
Now it’s time to dye! We used a premixed solution that is non-toxic / kid-safe and all you needed to do was spray it right onto damp fabric. We bought a dark and light green, red, and then black fabric markers.
To keep our floor safe, we used a garbage bag and just rotated the shirt to color the other side.
Once your t-shirt is dyed following the instructions for the dye, let it air dry, and then dry it in the dryer.
We’re not sure if our bag is a strawberry or a watermelon; we think it could be both, and that makes my daughter SUPER happy! She absolutely loves her bag so much, so we’re going to make a few more in different sizes. You can use any size t-shirt you like for this DIY t-shirt bag. Old shirt, new shirt, stained shirt, or even a tank top!
We’re going to be ready for the farmers market with our new bags and LIFEWTR from 7-Eleven. LIFEWTR is purified and pH balanced, with electrolytes for taste, perfect to keep us hydrated during our market trips! I’m actually going to let Kay design her own and can’t wait to see what she comes up with. I think she’s definitely inspired by the creative labels on LIFEWTR! She loves making things.
