This morning my daughter woke up and asked for pretzels.  We love going to the Philly Pretzel Factory, but today I thought it would be nice to make them at home with her.  It was her very first time making homemade soft pretzels!  She couldn’t wait to eat them, really she couldn’t wait.  Haha!  We made a quick batch of regular pretzels and they were delicious, however mommy and baby girl both have a sweet tooth.  We had to make some homemade Cinnamon Sugar Soft Pretzel Bites!  We toned it down a bit from the stuff you’d get in the mall, you know the ones that are completely soaked in butter and completely covered in sugar.

We actually made them sweet throughout.  Some places will have an actual pretzel that just has sugar on it, ick!  We add brown sugar and cinnamon and nixed the salt in this pretzel recipe.  I love using all organic ingredients and do notice that the organic sugar doesn’t stick as well as the regular sugar would – however we feel better about the organic cane sugar.

They’re chewy, soft and delicious.  You will not be able to stop at just one or two, you’ve been warned!  In fact my toddler ate almost an entire bowl herself.   This bowl was gobbled up in seconds.  We enjoyed it as you’d enjoy popcorn while we watched The Avengers.  I’ve seen the movie about 5 times in the last week.  My daughter and I are so excited to see the new one.  We’ll have to make another batch of these to take to the movies!

Cinnamon Sugar Soft Pretzel Bites

Cinnamon Sugar Soft Pretzels are so delicious!!

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 package active dry yeast ((2 1/4 teaspoons))
  • 2 ounces unsalted butter (, melted)
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • Oil
  • 1/2 Gallon Boiling Water
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • cinnamon + sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  1. In a stand mixer combine warm water, sugar, cinnamon, yeast, and butter.
  2. Allow to sit for 5 minutes so the yeast can do it’s thing.
  3. Using the dough hook on the stand mixer slowly mix and add in the flour.
  4. Knead for 5 minutes in the mixer and then place into a large greased bowl (using oil) and covered with a clean kitchen towel.
  5. Leave the dough in a warm area and allow to rise for an hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
  7. In a pot of boiling water add in the baking soda.
  8. Shape the pretzels however you’d like and then add them into the water mixture, boiling for about 20-30 seconds.
  9. Remove the pretzels from the water using a slotted spoon and place onto a large cookie sheet with a silpat or parchment paper.
  10. Bake for 15 minutes or until browned.
  11. Once the pretzels are done place them into a large bowl (one that has a lid) with butter and cinnamon sugar.
  12. Place the lid on and shake, shake, shake!
  13. If you want more of a sugary coating you can coat the pretzels as you take them out of the water and before placing into the oven, or use more butter. We like the little amount of sugar since there’s brown sugar and cinnamon inside the pretzels.
